CLIPPED 1858/7 FLYING EAGLE CENT
This coin was purchased raw off of ebay. I was worried
about the clip being authentic but took a gamble on it. When I received it I was still worried. I shared
it with some very sharp error collectors and with the help of MIKE DIAMOND and SEAN REYNOLDS, I put my
worries away. Another collector, JOHN BAUMGART, who specializes in VAM's noticed the broken wing tip on the eagle.
This is one of the major pick up points for spotting the 8/7 variety on this coin. I took a look under
my intel play scope and sure enough, there was the over date! Knowing the coin had some corrosion I
decided to send it to ANACS for authentication. They agreed with everyone's opinions and slabbed the
coin an authentic 1858/7 with a straight clip. Due to the corrosion it was net graded to Fine 12 with
Very Fine details. I'll quote Gary Wagnon as saying "Keep your eyes open, they are out there!""
Here is what the coin looked like the day that I got it. You can see it has very nice blakesley effect opposite the clip.
